Documents

Most containers that get held at a destination port do not have a quality problem. They have a paperwork problem, and it was avoidable at origin.

The core set

Every shipment on this corridor carries some version of this. The commercial documents are yours; the regulatory ones are issued by a named body and take time.

The three that actually cause detentions

  1. Certificate of Origin that does not match the invoice. A description mismatch between the CoO and the commercial invoice is the most common avoidable hold. Check them against each other before either is signed.
  2. Halal certificate from an unrecognised body. Valid-looking, useless in Indonesia. Check the certifier against the BPJPH list first.
  3. An import permit that expired while the goods were in production. Particularly on fresh produce, where the permit is often shorter than the growing cycle.

Letters of credit

If you are paying by LC, the document set has to satisfy the bank as well as customs, and banks reject on detail that customs would wave through. Send us the draft LC before it is issued. Amending an LC costs money and time; getting the wording right first does not.

Where we fit
