Indonesia, in short

Indonesia is not one market. Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi buy differently, clear differently and are served by different shipping.

Ports

PortServesNote
Tanjung Priok, JakartaGreater Jakarta, west JavaThe default. Most volume, most services, most congestion.
Tanjung Perak, SurabayaEast JavaStrong for textiles and food manufacture.
Belawan, MedanNorth SumatraUseful for Sumatra-based buyers. Fewer direct services.
MakassarSulawesi and eastern IndonesiaSmaller. Usually reached via transhipment.

Who buys what

  • Spinning and weaving mills — cotton yarn. Indonesia imports around 99% of its cotton and yarn imports rose roughly 59% between 2023 and 2024. Vietnam, China and India hold about 89% of import value, which is exactly why a credible fourth origin has room.
  • Food manufacturers and distributors — spices, pulses, dry fruit. All now inside the halal regime.
  • Supplement brands and contract packers — nutraceuticals, herbal extracts. BPOM registration governs the timeline.
  • Hospital and clinic procurement — surgical and dental instruments. Blocked without AKL registration.

What Indonesian buyers will ask you

  1. Who else have you shipped to in Southeast Asia, and can they be contacted.
  2. Which halal body certified you, by name.
  3. Can you hold specification across repeat orders, not just the first one.
  4. Who inspects before loading, and will you accept an inspection you do not control.

The fourth question is the one that separates suppliers who get repeat orders from suppliers who get one.

Seasons that matter

Ramadan and Eid shift food demand and shipping schedules on both ends. Kinnow ships December to March; mango May to August. Plan around both calendars.
